Breast reduction surgery is a little more involved than getting breast implants. Once the new breast size is determined the surgeon is able to accurately mark out the area where the cutting part of the procedure will take place. A breast reduction involves a degree of reconstrutive surgery in which the surgeon will have to make incisions and cut around the areola to reposition them to a higher area of the breast. In the case where the areola is overly big, the aim is to cut it back as per radius of areola itself.
Once this is done, the surgeon will remove a determined amount of breast tissue including skin and excess fat until the desired breast size is achieved.
The surgeon will then start stitching each breast together. Breast reduction surgery requires a skilled surgeon that has lot of experience and an eye for detail.
These stitched are found in the areola in a straight line going down towards the breast’s crease. You may wait for a maximum of 3 hours for the procedure to complete, but can be lower depending on your case.
What happens at Post breast reduction surgery?
Following your surgery you will be required to have :
– dressing on the chest for seven days to encourage healing
– tubes for draining are introduced to help get rid of unwanted fluids, though they are removed after nearly a day.
– discharge is within the same day
Following the procedure, we will arrange an appointment within 7-10 days time so that the dressing can be replaced and the surgeon can observe how the healing process is progressing. We use stitches to will dissolve within a set period and therefor there is need for there removal.
Resuming normal duties
Post surgery you are required to rest and do as little activity as possible . You will be able to resume your light tasks after a period of a few days. It will take at least a month to be able resume normal activities.
